Rocky Mountain Arsenal Tour
Tuesday, August 27 1:00pm-6:00pm
SOLD OUT
In less than a year following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Army transformed 27 square miles of quiet farmland into a chemical warfare agents manufacturing facility to serve as a deterrent during World War II. After the war, the Army leased some RMA facilities to industry to produce agricultural chemicals. Decades later, the site was placed on the EPA’s Superfund list, and a comprehensive environmental cleanup began in partnership with the regulatory agencies. More than $2 billion has been spent to remove contamination, reseed and restore the land, and transform RMA into one of the nation’s largest urban national wildlife refuges. Today, the site is home to bald eagles, black-footed ferrets, mule deer, meadowlarks and more than 200 bison. The RMA has had a VPP presence for more than 20 years, and there are three VPP participants at the site responsible for the operation and maintenance of the environmental cleanup. Participants on this tour will begin at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Visitor Center to hear from VPP representatives of Navarro Research and Engineering, AECOM, and the U.S. Army about the history of the site, their VPP journeys, and some of their many best practices. The tour will include the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Eagle Repository (the only one in the nation), the Custom’s warehouse (where contraband seized by the customs and border patrol is kept), a groundwater treatment plant, and a portion of the nature driving tour, including the bison pastures. Hopefully, the bison will cooperate by grazing where visitors can see them.
